Visit details

A parent or guardian joins the visit. Charles talks with both of you, looks at what can be seen on camera and decides whether telehealth fits the child’s age and condition.

Some problems need a hands-on exam, testing, vaccines, a specialist or emergency care. When that is the case, you hear it right away.

Patient Questions

Questions about pediatrics.

All Patient Questions
What information helps during a child's video appointment?

Have your child's age, symptoms, medical history, medications, allergies and current temperature available when possible. A parent or guardian should usually participate.

Can a child's cough be evaluated through video?

Mild cough symptoms can often be discussed, but breathing difficulty, fast breathing or worsening illness requires prompt in-person assessment.

When is a fever in an older child concerning?

The child's overall condition, duration, associated symptoms and medical history matter. Lethargy, dehydration, trouble breathing or severe symptoms need urgent assessment.

Can a child with ear pain be diagnosed online?

We can review symptoms, but diagnosing an ear infection may require looking inside the ear with an otoscope, so in-person care may be recommended.

Can seasonal allergies in children be managed remotely?

Often. We can review symptom patterns and discuss age-appropriate care, while determining whether an in-person examination is needed.

Can you assess a new rash on my child?

Some rashes can be assessed with photographs and a video visit. Fever with a concerning rash, rapid spread or a very ill appearance requires in-person care.

How can I tell whether my child is becoming dehydrated?

Reduced urination, very dry mouth, poor fluid intake and unusual sleepiness are warning signs. Significant dehydration needs urgent in-person evaluation.

Can you discuss recurring stomachaches in a child?

Yes. We can review patterns and possible causes, but persistent or severe pain, weight loss or bloody stools may require hands-on evaluation and testing.

Can I ask about school attendance after an illness?

Yes. We can discuss symptom recovery and general return-to-school considerations, with documentation only when supported by the clinical assessment.

Are controlled medications handled through routine pediatric refill visits?

No. Routine refill visits are for established patients' non-controlled medications. Any controlled-medication management requires a separate appropriate evaluation and service.

What types of symptoms require an in-person evaluation?

Symptoms that need a hands-on exam, imaging right away, stitches, a procedure or close monitoring. Examples include a possible broken bone, a deep cut, severe abdominal pain and some pelvic symptoms.

When should I go directly to urgent care or the emergency room?

Call 911 or go to the ER for new or unexplained chest pain or pressure, severe trouble breathing, signs of stroke, major injury, uncontrolled bleeding, severe dehydration or thoughts of harming yourself or others. For a mental health crisis, call or text 988 any time.

Good to know

Services, screening recommendations, testing, treatment options, referrals and prescribing may vary with your age, medical history, symptoms, where you are physically located at the time of the visit, state and federal requirements, insurance requirements, and whether your condition can be safely managed by telehealth. Conditions and services listed here are examples. An appointment does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, a prescription, a controlled medication, hormone therapy, a lab order, an imaging study, a sleep study, a specialist referral, an accommodation letter or a particular treatment. Treatment decisions follow a clinical evaluation and the provider’s judgment.
