Visit details

Charles asks how the pain started, where it is, what makes it better or worse and what you have tried. Many musculoskeletal problems can be assessed with guided movement on camera.

Treatment can include non-medication approaches, non-controlled medications, imaging orders and referrals to physical therapy or orthopedics when needed.

Patient Questions

Questions about short-term pain management.

All Patient Questions
Can a new episode of low back pain be evaluated by video?

Often, yes. We review how it started, where it hurts and any warning signs, then decide whether home care or in-person assessment is appropriate.

Does neck pain after a strain always require an X-ray?

No. Imaging is based on trauma history, examination needs and warning symptoms; uncomplicated muscular pain often does not require immediate imaging.

Can a swollen or painful joint be assessed online?

An initial discussion may help, but a hot, red, swollen joint, fever or inability to bear weight may need urgent in-person examination.

Are there options for pain relief besides prescription medication?

Depending on the cause, heat or cold, activity modifications, exercise, physical therapy and suitable nonprescription medicines may help.

Can short-term pain be made worse by poor sleep or stress?

Yes. Sleep disruption, stress and reduced activity may amplify pain. A treatment plan may address these alongside the physical symptoms.

What should I tell you about medicines I have already tried?

Share medication names, doses, duration, response and side effects, including over-the-counter products, so we can avoid unsafe combinations.

When should I start moving again after a minor muscle strain?

Gentle activity is often helpful once tolerated, but the right timing depends on the injury. We can discuss a gradual return to normal activities.

Can you refer me for physical therapy after an injury?

When appropriate, we can discuss rehabilitation goals and arrange a referral to a local physical therapist.

How do you decide when imaging is necessary for pain?

Imaging is considered when the history or clinical findings suggest fracture, neurological involvement or another condition where test results could change management.

Why isn't a standard refill appointment appropriate for ongoing controlled pain medication?

Routine refill visits are limited to non-controlled medications. Controlled medications require the appropriate separate clinical evaluation and medication-management process; prescribing is never guaranteed.

Can you order X-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans, or MRIs?

Yes, when they are clinically indicated. Imaging orders go to a facility near you, and we review the results with you.

Good to know

Services, screening recommendations, testing, treatment options, referrals and prescribing may vary with your age, medical history, symptoms, where you are physically located at the time of the visit, state and federal requirements, insurance requirements, and whether your condition can be safely managed by telehealth. Conditions and services listed here are examples. An appointment does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, a prescription, a controlled medication, hormone therapy, a lab order, an imaging study, a sleep study, a specialist referral, an accommodation letter or a particular treatment. Treatment decisions follow a clinical evaluation and the provider’s judgment.
