Visit details

An ADHD evaluation looks at your history from childhood forward, how attention problems show up at school, work and home, and what else could be playing a part, such as anxiety, depression, sleep or medications. Standardized questionnaires and prior records help.

A diagnosis does not automatically mean a particular medication will be prescribed. Treatment depends on the evaluation, your medical history, federal and state prescribing rules and clinical judgment. Options can include medication where appropriate, skills and organizational strategies, and treatment of anything that overlaps.

GeneSight® TestingPharmacogenomic testing is not routinely needed before ADHD treatment. Evidence varies by medication and age, and testing cannot identify the best medication for every person. Discuss whether a specific result would change your care.

Patient Questions

Questions about ADHD.

All Patient Questions
Can ADHD first become apparent in adulthood?

Yes. Some people recognize longstanding attention or executive-function difficulties only after work or life demands increase. Evaluation includes looking for symptoms that began earlier in life.

What is executive dysfunction?

It refers to difficulty with skills such as planning, starting tasks, organizing, time management and regulating attention. These difficulties can occur with ADHD and other conditions.

Is an online ADHD questionnaire enough for a diagnosis?

No. Questionnaires can support an assessment, but diagnosis requires clinical history, functional impact and consideration of other causes.

Can poor sleep make ADHD symptoms look worse?

Yes. Insufficient sleep, insomnia and sleep apnea can affect attention and memory. Sleep patterns are part of a comprehensive ADHD evaluation.

What are nonstimulant treatment options for ADHD?

Depending on clinical needs, nonstimulant medications and skills-based approaches may be considered. Each option has different benefits, limitations and monitoring needs.

Why might blood pressure or heart rate be checked during ADHD treatment?

Some ADHD medications can affect cardiovascular measures. Monitoring helps guide safe prescribing and follow-up.

Can ADHD treatment address school or workplace functioning?

Yes. We can discuss practical tools for time management, routines and organization, along with medically appropriate treatment.

Why does childhood history matter during an adult evaluation?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition, so evidence of symptoms beginning during childhood helps distinguish it from newly developed attention problems.

Do medication plans change if anxiety is also present?

They may. We assess how symptoms overlap and choose an approach based on the full clinical picture, rather than treating focus difficulties in isolation.

Do controlled ADHD medications qualify for a standard refill appointment?

No. Standard medication refill appointments are for established patients seeking non-controlled medications. Controlled ADHD medications require the appropriate ADHD medication-management visit and evaluation, and prescribing is not guaranteed.

Good to know

Services, screening recommendations, testing, treatment options, referrals and prescribing may vary with your age, medical history, symptoms, where you are physically located at the time of the visit, state and federal requirements, insurance requirements, and whether your condition can be safely managed by telehealth. Conditions and services listed here are examples. An appointment does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, a prescription, a controlled medication, hormone therapy, a lab order, an imaging study, a sleep study, a specialist referral, an accommodation letter or a particular treatment. Treatment decisions follow a clinical evaluation and the provider’s judgment.
