Wellbutrin (bupropion) is approved to treat major depressive disorder. Zyban, a sustained-release bupropion product, is approved as an aid to smoking cessation.
Wellbutrin is not FDA-approved for anxiety disorders. Prescribing it specifically for those conditions is an off-label use.
Whether bupropion is appropriate depends on your symptoms, medical history, and other treatments. An individual evaluation is important.
How it works.
Wellbutrin is the branded name of bupropion, which works on dopamine and norepinephrine.
Other antidepressants used for anxiety include SSRIs, such as sertraline and escitalopram, and SNRIs, such as venlafaxine.
These medications act on different neurotransmitter pathways. Your provider considers their benefits and risks when choosing a treatment.
When used for depression, bupropion may take several weeks to produce a noticeable benefit. Some people experience restlessness or difficulty sleeping, which should be discussed with the prescriber.
There’s no way to predict in advance which side of that you’ll land on, which is part of why bupropion for anxiety isn’t the go-to option in the first place.
When it helps.
Depression and anxiety show up together more often than not. If someone’s depression comes with low motivation, fog, or trouble concentrating, bupropion can improve that, and the anxiety sometimes gets better along with it, even though it was never the actual target.
A few other reasons Wellbutrin for anxiety comes up in practice:
- Combined with an SSRI to offset fatigue or low libido
- Tried when standard anxiety medications haven’t worked
- Bupropion may be considered when depression coexists with other concerns. Use for ADHD is off-label, and treatment selection depends on the individual’s history and risks.
When it doesn’t.
If the anxiety is the main problem, especially with panic attacks, bupropion’s stimulating effect can make it worse instead of better. Symptoms to watch for:
- Restlessness
- Racing heartbeat
- Trouble sleeping
- Irritability
These usually show up within the first week or two, which is why early follow-up matters more with this medication than with some others.
Wellbutrin has several contraindications, including a seizure disorder and a current or prior diagnosis of anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa.
Your prescriber must review your full medical and medication history before deciding whether bupropion is appropriate.
What patients notice first.
Most people who do well on bupropion notice it in small ways before anything dramatic. More energy in the morning, an easier time getting through a to-do list, less of that heavy, stuck feeling.
Anxiety that improves usually improves as a side effect of that, not as the headline.
The people who don’t do well on it usually notice it fast too.
A heart that feels like it’s working harder than it should, trouble winding down at night, a low hum of unease that wasn’t there before.
If that’s what you’re feeling in the first couple of weeks, it’s worth calling your provider rather than waiting it out, since bupropion isn’t something you push through hoping it settles on its own.
What a real evaluation looks like.
Before prescribing this, a provider should ask about your symptom history, whether panic attacks are part of it, what’s been tried already and how you responded, and whether anything in your medical history rules bupropion out.
If none of that comes up before a prescription gets offered, that’s worth pushing back on, whether the visit happens online or in an office.
GeneSight® Testing may provide additional information for selected patients.
A cheek swab provides genetic information about how your body may process certain psychiatric medications. It is considered alongside your symptoms, history, and previous treatment response; it does not guarantee which medication will work.
The short version.
Does Wellbutrin help with anxiety? For some patients, particularly when depression is part of the picture, yes. For others, it makes things feel worse instead of better.
There’s no way to know which one you are without an actual conversation with someone who’s asking the right questions before writing a prescription, not after.
Wade’s Care First offers same-day telehealth visits (subject to current scheduling availability) for anxiety and depression. Book an appointment if you want to talk through what’s going on before starting anything new.

Answers connected to this topic.
What should I do if a mental health medication causes side effects?
Contact the practice for guidance. Do not stop a prescribed medicine abruptly without advice unless urgent symptoms require emergency treatment.
How long does it take for an antidepressant to help?
Some symptoms may begin to improve within a few weeks, but full response can take longer. Timing varies by medication and individual, and follow-up is important.
What is the difference between a medication-response history and a GeneSight® Testing result?
Your past experience shows how a medication actually affected you; GeneSight® Testing provides genetic information about selected medication-related pathways. Both may inform decisions.
