Services, screening recommendations, testing, treatment options, referrals and prescribing may vary with your age, medical history, symptoms, where you are physically located at the time of the visit, state and federal requirements, insurance requirements, and whether your condition can be safely managed by telehealth. Conditions and services listed here are examples. An appointment does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, a prescription, a controlled medication, hormone therapy, a lab order, an imaging study, a sleep study, a specialist referral, an accommodation letter or a particular treatment. The Villages is a retirement community. Age-related Preventive Care, medication review, fall prevention and caregiver support are common care considerations.
Living in The Villages means most care is close by golf cart, but appointment slots fill quickly in a community where most residents are over 65. A video visit with Charles Wade, FNP-BC, adds a reliable option for primary care, medication review, sleep, skin concerns, mood and memory worries, and minor urgent problems, with labs, imaging and prescriptions sent to locations in Sumter, Lake or Marion County.
UF Health Spanish Plaines Hospital, formerly The Villages Hospital, has a 24-hour emergency room on El Camino Real, and UF Health Leesburg is nearby; those remain the right places for emergencies. Telehealth is for the steady follow-up that keeps chronic conditions stable between in-person visits.
Florida’s uninsured rate for people under 65 was 13.6% in 2024 versus 9.8% nationally (KFF, ACS 1-year); all-ages uninsured was 10.9%, ranking 45th among states (America’s Health Rankings, ACS 2024). As of January 1, 2026, Florida had 320 primary care HPSAs and 239 mental health HPSAs, and would need 1,434 more primary care practitioners and 545 more mental health practitioners to eliminate them (Florida Senate analysis of SB 1480, 2026).
Hurricane season continuity: during qualifying emergencies, ask your pharmacist and insurer about early refills under Florida law; authorized refills and other coverage requirements still apply. The Villages area relies heavily on Medicare.
This helps Villages residents managing several chronic conditions and medications who want a clinician to review the whole list, adult children coordinating care for a parent, snowbirds who need continuity while in Florida, and anyone with mobility or driving limits. It also suits people addressing sleep, mood, weight or skin concerns privately from home. Go in person for physical exams, injuries, wound care, falls or same-hour imaging.
Call 911 or go to the UF Health Spanish Plaines emergency room or UF Health Leesburg for chest pain, stroke symptoms such as facial droop or slurred speech, sudden confusion, severe shortness of breath, a fall with head injury or any crisis involving risk of self-harm.
Medicaid: Florida Medicaid is delivered through the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care (SMMC) program run by the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA). Under SB 1950 (2022), the state moved from 11 numbered regions to 9 lettered regions (A-I) effective February 2025, with new plan contracts starting February 1, 2025. Regions by county (F.S. 409.966): A = Panhandle/Big Bend (Escambia through Leon, incl. Jackson and Leon); B = North Central and Northeast (incl. Duval, Sumter, Lake, Marion, Alachua, Volusia); C = Pasco and Pinellas; D = Hardee, Highlands, Hillsborough, Manatee, Polk; E = Brevard, Orange, Osceola, Seminole; F = Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Glades, Hendry, Lee, Sarasota; G = Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, Palm Beach, St. Lucie; H = Broward; I = Miami-Dade and Monroe. Florida Blue (Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, part of GuideWell) sells individual/family, employer and Medicare plans and is a commercial insurer, not a Medicaid plan.
AHCA’s MMA plans-by-region table: Sunshine Health, Humana Medical Plan, Simply Healthcare and Florida Community Care serve all nine regions (A-I); Community Care Plan serves E, F, G, H, I; Aetna Better Health serves D, E, I; UnitedHealthcare serves B, D, I; Molina Healthcare serves Region I only (Miami-Dade and Monroe) after exiting its other regions effective 2/1/2025. Dental plans DentaQuest and Liberty serve all regions. Place mapping: Jacksonville and The Villages = Region B; Tallahassee and Marianna = Region A; Tampa = Region D; Orlando = Region E; St. Petersburg = Region C; Fort Myers and Immokalee = Region F; Miami = Region I.
