Are there community health centers in Tampa for in-person care?

Tampa Family Health Centers, Inc. (roughly 15-16 sites in Hillsborough County with medical, dental, pharmacy and behavioral health) serve the area with in-person primary care on a sliding scale. Good to know

Services, screening recommendations, testing, treatment options, referrals and prescribing may vary with your age, medical history, symptoms, where you are physically located at the time of the visit, state and federal requirements, insurance requirements, and whether your condition can be safely managed by telehealth. Conditions and services listed here are examples. An appointment does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, a prescription, a controlled medication, hormone therapy, a lab order, an imaging study, a sleep study, a specialist referral, an accommodation letter or a particular treatment. Treatment decisions follow a clinical evaluation and the provider’s judgment.

Getting care in Tampa

Fast-growing Gulf Coast city with a young median age (35.8) and a large academic medical hub on Davis Islands.

Tampa residents can use a video visit for primary care, mental health, ADHD, weight management, sleep, skin concerns and minor urgent problems without fighting I-275 or Dale Mabry traffic. Charles Wade, FNP-BC, sees you on camera and sends labs, imaging and prescriptions to locations near your neighborhood, whether that is Seminole Heights, Westchase, Brandon or New Tampa. Tampa General, BayCare St. Joseph’s, AdventHealth Tampa and HCA Florida South Tampa cover emergencies and hospital care; telehealth is for the ongoing management that otherwise competes with work and family time. If a visit reveals something that needs hands-on evaluation, you will be told clearly and pointed to the right local option.

Access in Hillsborough County

Florida’s uninsured rate for people under 65 was 13.6% in 2024 versus 9.8% nationally (KFF, ACS 1-year); all-ages uninsured was 10.9%, ranking 45th among states (America’s Health Rankings, ACS 2024). As of January 1, 2026, Florida had 320 primary care HPSAs and 239 mental health HPSAs, and would need 1,434 more primary care practitioners and 545 more mental health practitioners to eliminate them (Florida Senate analysis of SB 1480, 2026). Hurricane season continuity: during qualifying emergencies, ask your pharmacist and insurer about early refills under Florida law; authorized refills and other coverage requirements still apply.

Who this helps most in Tampa

This fits Tampa’s many working adults, students and young families who want quick, consistent access for anxiety, depression, ADHD, blood pressure, diabetes, weight or sleep issues, and for parents of children five and older with routine concerns. It also helps older residents who prefer not to drive to appointments for medication review and lab follow-up. Choose an in-person clinic or urgent care for physical exams, injuries, suturing or same-hour X-rays. Call 911 or go to an emergency department such as Tampa General, St. Joseph’s or AdventHealth Tampa for chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe breathing trouble, serious allergic reactions or any crisis involving risk of self-harm.

Local health considerations

  • Tampa’s median age is 35.8 (ACS 2024), younger than Florida’s 42.7, so demand skews to working-age primary care, mental health, ADHD and family needs.
  • Heat: NWS identifies older adults, children, pregnant women and people on certain medications as highest risk; outdoor workers in Tampa’s long summer should plan hydration and know heat-illness warning signs.
  • Hurricane season on the Gulf Coast: Florida’s emergency-refill law requires covered insurers to waive early-refill timing restrictions under qualifying emergency conditions when authorized refills remain. Ask your pharmacy and insurer whether your prescription qualifies.
