Getting care in Syracuse

Central New York’s hub city with three downtown hospitals, a state-funded $450 million hospital annex project that includes an expanded emergency department and burn unit tied to expected Micron-driven growth, and city neighborhoods designated as shortage areas for both primary care and mental health.

Syracuse has three hospitals within a mile of each other downtown, but the city is still a federally designated shortage area for low-income primary care and for mental health, and the state is spending $450 million to quadruple Upstate’s emergency department because it cannot handle today’s walk-in volume. If you are using the ED for things that are not emergencies because you cannot get an appointment, a video visit is a reasonable alternative.

Charles Wade, FNP-BC, provides primary care, mental health and ADHD care, weight management, urgent concerns, dermatology, men’s and women’s health, pediatrics from age five and geriatric care by video, and sends orders to a Syracuse-area lab, imaging center or pharmacy. You must be in New York during the visit.

Access in Onondaga County (city of Syracuse; Central New York)

HRSA designates a low-income primary care HPSA for Syracuse (LI-Syracuse RSA-52, score 16, March 2026) and a low-income City of Syracuse RSA 52 mental health HPSA (score 19; designated May 29, 2026). Medicaid enrollment was about 31.1% of Onondaga County residents in 2015-16. In May 2025 the state approved the full $450 million Upstate requested for an emergency department four times its current size, citing expected population growth from Micron and the need to separate walk-in patients from trauma care.

Who this helps most in Syracuse

Telehealth helps Syracuse residents who work shifts at the hospitals, university or warehouses, students and families on the South and West Sides where clinics are full, and older adults in the suburbs who avoid winter driving. It is a practical way to keep up with depression, anxiety, ADHD, blood pressure, diabetes and weight goals. It is not for emergencies: chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe breathing trouble, serious injuries or a mental health crisis mean 911 or the nearest ED at Upstate, Crouse or St. Joseph’s, with children’s emergencies at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. Hands-on exams, procedures and vaccines need an in-person clinic; Syracuse Community Health Center offers those on a sliding fee.

Local health considerations

  • Emergency capacity: Upstate’s ED is being quadrupled with $450 million in state funds because current volume and expected Micron-related growth exceed the existing department. Source: WSYR via Yahoo News, May 6, 2025.
  • Mental Health shortage: the City of Syracuse carries a mental health HPSA score of 19, among the highest in the state. Source: HRSA HPSA data download.
  • Lab consolidation: Laboratory Alliance of Central New York’s patient service centers moved to Labcorp, so blood-draw locations and billing may have changed for longtime patients. Source: Labcorp’s website/ma/laballiance.
