Getting care in Rochester

Lake Ontario city anchored by two large health systems, UR Medicine and Rochester Regional Health, with city neighborhoods designated as Medicaid-eligible shortage areas and winters that regularly bring 70 to 90 inches of snow.

Rochester has two large health systems, but if you live on the city’s north or south side, federal data still classifies your neighborhood as a shortage area for Medicaid-eligible primary care, and the whole city is designated short on mental health clinicians. Add a winter that drops 70 to 90 inches of snow and a 15-minute drive to Strong or Rochester General can become an hour.

A video visit with Charles Wade, FNP-BC, covers primary care, mental health and ADHD, weight management, urgent concerns, dermatology, men’s and women’s health, children five and older, and geriatric and sleep concerns. Orders are sent to a Rochester-area lab, imaging center or pharmacy you choose. You must be in New York during the visit.

Access in Monroe County (city of Rochester; Finger Lakes region)

HRSA designates Northside Rochester (primary care score 17) and Southside Rochester (score 14) as Medicaid-eligible primary care HPSAs and the City of Rochester as a mental health HPSA (score 19). Medicaid enrollment was about 31.4% of Monroe County residents in 2015-16. Winter: Rochester recorded 88.6 inches of snow in 2024-25 and a record 161.7 inches in 1959-60 (NWS, unofficial table).

Who this helps most in Rochester

Telehealth suits Rochester residents who want reliable follow-up for depression, anxiety, ADHD, blood pressure, diabetes or weight without driving in lake-effect snow, as well as older adults in the suburbs who no longer drive at night and parents of school-age children. It is also useful for a quick look at a rash or a medication question. It is not for emergencies: chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe breathing trouble, serious injury or a mental health crisis require 911 or the nearest ED at Strong Memorial, Rochester General, Highland or Unity. Hands-on exams, procedures and vaccines need an in-person clinic, and Jordan Health offers sliding-fee care in the city if cost is a barrier.
