All Patient Questions
Does Wade’s Care First have an office in Hempstead?

No. Wade’s Care First is a telehealth practice. You join your visit by secure video from home, work or anywhere in New York, and Charles Wade, FNP-BC is licensed to treat you while you are in the state. Anything that needs hands-on care is coordinated with facilities in and around Hempstead, such as Nassau University Medical Center (NuHealth; 2201 Hempstead Turnpike, East Meadow; Nassau County’s only safety-net hospital and a Level 1 trauma center), Mercy Hospital (Catholic Health; 1000 North Village Avenue, Rockville Centre; emergency department), Long Island Jewish Medical Center (Northwell Health; 270-05 76th Avenue, New Hyde Park; emergency department) and Mount Sinai South Nassau (One Healthy Way, Oceanside; trauma center, stroke center, and an off-campus emergency department in Long Beach).

Where will I go for blood work if I live in Hempstead?

Northwell Health Labs. We send the order electronically to a location that is convenient for you or in your insurance network. Results come back to us for review with you.

Which Hempstead hospitals have an emergency department?

Nassau University Medical Center (NuHealth; 2201 Hempstead Turnpike, East Meadow; Nassau County’s only safety-net hospital and a Level 1 trauma center), Mercy Hospital (Catholic Health; 1000 North Village Avenue, Rockville Centre; emergency department), Long Island Jewish Medical Center (Northwell Health; 270-05 76th Avenue, New Hyde Park; emergency department) and Mount Sinai South Nassau (One Healthy Way, Oceanside; trauma center, stroke center, and an off-campus emergency department in Long Beach). For chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke symptoms, severe bleeding, a major injury or thoughts of harming yourself, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department rather than booking a video visit.

Are there community health centers in Hempstead for in-person care?

Harmony Healthcare Long Island (formerly Long Island FQHC; HHS-funded health center; 619 Fulton Avenue, Hempstead, plus Elmont, Freeport, Oceanside, Roosevelt and Westbury; care regardless of insurance or ability to pay) serve the area with in-person primary care on a sliding scale. Many patients pair that kind of local clinic with telehealth for follow-ups, medication management and specialist coordination.

Can I use New York Medicaid or other insurance for a telehealth visit from Hempstead?

Many plans are accepted and benefits are verified before your visit. BCBS / Anthem PPO, UnitedHealthcare PPO, UMR (PPO), Aetna PPO, Cigna PPO, Humana PPO, Ambetter PPO, Fidelis Care / Ambetter (NY Marketplace), TRICARE. The Essential Plan (New York’s Basic Health Program) covers adults under 200% of the federal poverty level with no monthly premium; a 2024 waiver that had extended it to 250% FPL ended July 1, 2026 after federal funding cuts, ending Essential Plan eligibility for the affected income group; those members may qualify for Qualified Health Plans with financial assistance. Is Hempstead a health professional shortage area?

None: no designated primary care or mental health HPSA in Nassau County in HRSA’s current list, which can understate local need in a village like Hempstead that relies on the safety-net system. Telehealth can complement local clinicians by offering another way to access primary care, mental health and medication follow-up while you keep your local relationships.

Can orders be sent to a laboratory or imaging facility near me?

When clinically appropriate, we can send orders to a laboratory or imaging facility you choose. Confirm that the location performs the requested test, accepts the order and participates in your insurance network. Availability and travel distance vary by community.

Good to know

Services, screening recommendations, testing, treatment options, referrals and prescribing may vary with your age, medical history, symptoms, where you are physically located at the time of the visit, state and federal requirements, insurance requirements, and whether your condition can be safely managed by telehealth. Conditions and services listed here are examples. An appointment does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, a prescription, a controlled medication, hormone therapy, a lab order, an imaging study, a sleep study, a specialist referral, an accommodation letter or a particular treatment. Treatment decisions follow a clinical evaluation and the provider’s judgment.

Getting care in Hempstead

A dense, working-class Long Island village a few miles from Nassau University Medical Center, the county’s only public safety-net hospital, which has been in a documented financial crisis since 2024.

Hempstead sits in one of the most hospital-rich counties in the country, but for many village residents the practical option has been Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, the county’s only safety-net hospital, which has spent two years in a documented financial crisis. If you have waited weeks for a primary care or mental health appointment, or you rely on the bus along Hempstead Turnpike, a video visit may fit.

Charles Wade, FNP-BC, provides primary care, mental health and ADHD care, weight management, urgent concerns, dermatology, men’s and women’s health, pediatrics from age five and geriatric care by video, and sends orders to a Nassau lab, imaging center or pharmacy you choose. You must be in New York for the visit.

Access in Nassau County (incorporated Village of Hempstead, within the Town of Hempstead, Long Island)

Nassau University Medical Center, the county’s only safety-net hospital, received no state aid for two years through early 2025 and lawmakers warned its survival was at risk; reporting in January 2026 described a state commitment of nearly $110 million to cut a projected 2026 operating loss roughly in half. HRSA’s current data lists no designated primary care or mental health HPSA anywhere in Nassau County. Medicaid enrollment was about 23.9% of county residents in 2015-16. Transit: NICE buses and the LIRR Hempstead branch; most care requires a car or bus ride east along Hempstead Turnpike.

Who this helps most in Hempstead

Telehealth helps Hempstead residents who work long hours in retail, health care or trades, parents of school-age children, and older adults who no longer drive. It also suits anyone sorting out coverage after the Essential Plan changes who still needs blood pressure, diabetes, depression, anxiety or ADHD follow-up. It is not for emergencies: chest pain, stroke symptoms, serious injuries, severe breathing problems or a mental health crisis mean 911 or the nearest ED at NUMC, Mercy in Rockville Centre, LIJ in New Hyde Park or Mount Sinai South Nassau. Hands-on exams, procedures and vaccines need an in-person visit, and Harmony Healthcare’s Fulton Avenue center sees patients regardless of insurance.

Local health considerations

  • Safety-net fragility: NUMC’s finances have been in crisis since 2024, with operating losses of about $149 million in 2024 and state intervention in 2025-26. Source: NY Senate release (Feb 25, 2025); Crain’s New York via search summary.
  • Lab access at home: Northwell’s LabFly service draws blood at home across Nassau County, a useful option for homebound patients. Source: nwhlabs.northwell.edu.
  • Coverage: Nassau has one of downstate’s lower Medicaid shares (23.9%), so many Hempstead residents are on the Essential Plan or marketplace plans affected by the July 2026 changes. Source: United Hospital Fund; NYSDOH press release.
