Conditions and services listed here are examples. Nevada State Capitol in Carson City, Nevada.

Nevada’s state capital, a government and small-business town at roughly 4,700 feet on the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada, serving a quad-county region (Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, Storey).
Carson City has one hospital system and a small physician community for a capital that also serves Minden, Gardnerville, Dayton and Virginia City. The 2025 UNR Med workforce report counts three psychiatrists and two dermatologists in the city, which is why mental health, ADHD and skin concerns are often the hardest appointments to get. A video visit with Wade’s Care First covers those needs along with routine primary care, blood pressure and diabetes follow-up, weight management and sleep problems, from your home or office near the Capitol.
The practice is telehealth only and has no Carson City office. Anything that needs hands-on care, such as blood tests or imaging, is ordered to a Carson Tahoe, Quest or Labcorp site close to you.
UNR Med counts only 149 active physicians in Carson City (2.0 percent of the state total), including just 3 psychiatrists, 1 child and adolescent psychiatrist and 2 dermatologists, for a city of about 62,000 that also serves Douglas, Lyon and Storey county residents. Nevada’s 2025 UNR Med physician workforce report finds the state would need 2,303 more physicians to reach the national per-capita average, including 251 family medicine doctors, 411 pediatricians and 105 psychiatrists; in 35 of 37 AMA specialty areas Nevada is below the national rate, and psychiatrists number 8.7 per 100,000 versus 12.2 nationally.
UNR Med reporting has placed Nevada 45th among states for active physicians and 48th for primary care physicians per capita. About 64.9 percent of Nevadans live in a federally designated primary care HPSA and 91.3 percent live in a mental health HPSA (15 of 17 counties are single-county mental health HPSAs). The state Primary Care Office notes all 17 counties carry some shortage designation; in cities a key driver is that many providers do not accept Medicaid, and in rural and frontier areas travel time to a provider can be several hours. Nevada’s uninsured rate was 11.4 percent in 2024 (47th of 50 states; US 8.2 percent).
This is a good fit for state employees and small-business owners who cannot spend half a day at a clinic, retirees in Carson City and Douglas County managing several medications, parents who need a pediatric visit for a child five or older, and adults seeking ADHD, anxiety or depression care in a city with very few psychiatrists. It also serves nearby Lyon and Storey county residents for whom every appointment means a drive.
Some problems need in-person care now. Go to Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center’s 24-hour emergency department, or call 911, for chest pain, stroke symptoms, serious injury, severe breathing trouble or a mental health emergency. For in-person care on a sliding fee, Nevada Health Centers’ Sierra Nevada Health Center accepts walk-ins.
Medicaid: Nevada Medicaid and Nevada Check Up (CHIP) are run by the Nevada Division of Health Care Financing and Policy under the Nevada Health Authority. Effective January 1, 2026, Medicaid managed care expanded from Clark and Washoe counties to all 17 Nevada counties; the state expected roughly 75,000 rural members to move into managed care (about a 10 percent increase). Roughly 126,000 people statewide remain in fee-for-service Medicaid, including children in foster care, juvenile justice and child welfare systems, people with disabilities, seniors 65 and older, and people served through Nevada’s three home- and community-based waiver programs. Rural members were auto-assigned to a plan by ZIP code, with a plan-selection deadline of December 26, 2025; members can still change plans within the state’s rules. Medicaid eligibility rules (work, school and volunteer requirements) are scheduled to change January 1, 2027.
Five managed care organizations hold 2026-2030 contracts: Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Healthcare Solutions (Elevance; the award notice listed it as Community Care Health Plan of Nevada), CareSource Nevada, Health Plan of Nevada (UnitedHealthcare), Molina Healthcare of Nevada, and SilverSummit Healthplan (Centene). Per the March 2025 intent-to-award, CareSource and SilverSummit serve Clark, Washoe and all rural counties; Anthem and Molina serve Clark and Washoe; Health Plan of Nevada serves Clark County only. Rural members (including Carson City, Elko and Nye counties) therefore choose between CareSource and SilverSummit.
