Michigan’s capital city, home to a county-run community health center network and a regional Level I trauma center, with access to care and behavioral health named as the area’s top health priorities.
Lansing has two emergency hospitals, University of Michigan Health-Sparrow and McLaren Greater Lansing, but the region’s own 2026 hospital implementation plan names access to care and behavioral health as its top two priorities and counts roughly 200 residents for every mental health provider. About six percent of Lansing adults under 65 had no insurance in 2023. A video visit with Charles Wade, FNP-BC, gives you primary care, mental health and ADHD follow-up, weight management, dermatology questions and urgent care for minor illness from home. He orders blood work and imaging to be done in Lansing and sends prescriptions to your pharmacy. Ingham Community Health Centers remain the local sliding-fee option when you need to be seen in person.
HRSA designates the low-income population of the Greater Lansing service area as a primary care HPSA (score 14); the County of Ingham FQHC scores 17 (primary care) and 14 (mental health). UM Health-Sparrow’s FY25-27 implementation plan (May 2026) reports 4.9% of Ingham County adults 18-64 uninsured in 2023 (6.2% in Lansing city), about 200 residents per mental health provider (2023), 10.3% of adults with 14+ days of poor mental health, and names Access to Care and Behavioral Health as the two priority areas. ACS 2024 5-year: 6.1% uninsured; 7.3% of households with no internet subscription.
Telehealth suits Lansing residents juggling state government, university or shift schedules who need steady management of blood pressure, diabetes, depression, anxiety or ADHD, and parents of kids over five with rashes, infections or school-related concerns. Ingham County data show a third of high school students reported depression in the 2023-24 school year and one in ten adults reported two weeks or more of poor mental health, so follow-up that fits around work matters.
Go in person for physicals, immunizations, procedures and anything needing hands-on examination. For chest pain, stroke signs, severe breathing trouble, major injury or a safety crisis, call 911; UM Health-Sparrow Lansing is the region’s Level I trauma center and McLaren Greater Lansing is Level III.
Medicaid: Michigan Medicaid is administered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Most beneficiaries are enrolled in managed care through the Comprehensive Health Care Program (CHCP); MDHHS posts the FY2026 CHCP contract and amendment on its Medicaid Health Plans page. The Healthy Michigan Plan is Michigan’s Medicaid expansion coverage for low-income adults. MI Coordinated Health, a new program for people with both Medicare and Medicaid, launched January 1, 2026 in select counties, replacing MI Health Link, with statewide expansion planned for 2027 (MDHHS newsroom, Oct. 9, 2024).
Nine Medicaid health plans hold CHCP contracts that took effect October 1, 2024 and run through September 30, 2029 with three optional one-year extensions: Aetna Better Health of Michigan, Blue Cross Complete of Michigan, HAP CareSource, McLaren Health Plan, Meridian Health Plan of Michigan, Molina Healthcare of Michigan, Priority Health Choice, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan and Upper Peninsula Health Plan (MHA summary of the April 8, 2024 award; Meridian press release). Plans vary by county per the MDHHS ’Michigan Medicaid Health Plan Listed by County’ (updated 1-10-2025): Wayne County has eight plans (all except Upper Peninsula Health Plan); Kent has six (Blue Cross Complete, Molina, McLaren, Priority Health Choice, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare); Ingham has four (McLaren, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, HAP CareSource); Washtenaw has six (Blue Cross Complete, McLaren, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, HAP CareSource); Genesee has six (Blue Cross Complete, Molina, McLaren, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare, HAP CareSource); Kalamazoo has four (McLaren, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna); Alpena has four (Blue Cross Complete, Molina, McLaren, Priority Health Choice); Marquette and the rest of the Upper Peninsula have one (Upper Peninsula Health Plan).
