The Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Meyer May House in Grand Rapids.
West Michigan’s largest city and regional medical hub, with a growing, increasingly diverse population and two large community health center networks.
Grand Rapids is West Michigan’s medical hub, with Corewell Health Butterworth, Blodgett and Helen DeVos Children’s, Trinity Health Grand Rapids and University of Michigan Health-West all within a short drive. Even so, HRSA designates the city’s low-income population as a primary care and mental health shortage area, and both local community health centers carry shortage scores of their own. A video visit with Charles Wade, FNP-BC, covers primary care, mental health, ADHD, weight management, dermatology questions and minor illness without a waiting room. He orders labs and imaging to be done locally and sends prescriptions to your pharmacy. If something needs a hands-on exam, he will tell you where to go in Grand Rapids.
HRSA designates the low-income population of Grand Rapids as a primary care HPSA (score 12) and mental health HPSA (score 10); Cherry Street Services (score 17 primary care / 15 mental health) and Catherine’s Health Center (16 / 13) are FQHC HPSAs. ACS 2024 1-year: 7.2% uninsured; 4.0% of households with no internet subscription. A recent Kent County community health needs assessment found 25% of respondents had challenges getting health care, with refugees, immigrants and people with disabilities most likely to report barriers (WOOD TV summary; assessment date not given in source).
This helps Grand Rapids residents who have insurance but still cannot find an open primary care slot, people working hourly shifts, and parents who want a child over five seen without pulling them from school. Kent County’s most recent community assessment found a quarter of survey respondents reported trouble getting care, with refugees, immigrants and people with disabilities most affected, and an earlier county survey found Latino residents more than twice as likely to be uninsured; Cherry Health and Catherine’s Health Center remain the sliding-fee options for in-person care. Go in person for exams, procedures and vaccines. For chest pain, stroke symptoms, serious injury or a mental health crisis, call 911 or go to Butterworth, Trinity Health or UM Health-West.
Medicaid: Michigan Medicaid is administered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Most beneficiaries are enrolled in managed care through the Comprehensive Health Care Program (CHCP); MDHHS posts the FY2026 CHCP contract and amendment on its Medicaid Health Plans page. The Healthy Michigan Plan is Michigan’s Medicaid expansion coverage for low-income adults. MI Coordinated Health, a new program for people with both Medicare and Medicaid, launched January 1, 2026 in select counties, replacing MI Health Link, with statewide expansion planned for 2027 (MDHHS newsroom, Oct. 9, 2024).
Nine Medicaid health plans hold CHCP contracts that took effect October 1, 2024 and run through September 30, 2029 with three optional one-year extensions: Aetna Better Health of Michigan, Blue Cross Complete of Michigan, HAP CareSource, McLaren Health Plan, Meridian Health Plan of Michigan, Molina Healthcare of Michigan, Priority Health Choice, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan and Upper Peninsula Health Plan (MHA summary of the April 8, 2024 award; Meridian press release). Plans vary by county per the MDHHS ’Michigan Medicaid Health Plan Listed by County’ (updated 1-10-2025): Wayne County has eight plans (all except Upper Peninsula Health Plan); Kent has six (Blue Cross Complete, Molina, McLaren, Priority Health Choice, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare); Ingham has four (McLaren, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, HAP CareSource); Washtenaw has six (Blue Cross Complete, McLaren, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, HAP CareSource); Genesee has six (Blue Cross Complete, Molina, McLaren, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare, HAP CareSource); Kalamazoo has four (McLaren, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna); Alpena has four (Blue Cross Complete, Molina, McLaren, Priority Health Choice); Marquette and the rest of the Upper Peninsula have one (Upper Peninsula Health Plan).
