Post-industrial city still recovering from the 2014-2015 water crisis, with a public Level I trauma hospital, two federally qualified health center networks and a county-wide low-income shortage designation.
Flint has three emergency hospitals close by, Hurley Medical Center, McLaren Flint and Henry Ford Genesys in Grand Blanc, but the county’s low-income population is a federally designated primary care and mental health shortage area, and both community health center networks carry shortage scores of their own. A video visit with Charles Wade, FNP-BC, offers primary care, mental health, ADHD, weight management, dermatology and urgent care for minor illness from home.
He orders blood work and imaging to be done in Flint and sends prescriptions to your pharmacy. Hamilton Community Health Network and Genesee Health System remain the in-person sliding-fee options, and the Genesee County Health Department on South Saginaw Street handles lead education and other public health programs.
HRSA designates the low-income population of Genesee County as a primary care HPSA (score 11) and mental health HPSA (score 18); Hamilton Community Health Network scores 17 (primary care) and 20 (mental health) and Genesee Health System 13 and 15. ACS 2024 1-year: 6.3% of Flint residents uninsured; 5.0% of households with no internet subscription. The Flint Registry enrolled more than 22,000 people affected by the water crisis and made over 35,000 service referrals before enrollment closed May 1, 2025.
Telehealth helps Flint residents managing blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, depression, anxiety or ADHD who cannot easily get across town, and parents whose children were exposed during the water crisis and want steady follow-up on growth, behavior and school concerns. The Flint Registry enrolled more than 22,000 people and made over 35,000 referrals before enrollment closed in 2025; a regular prescriber can help you act on those referrals.
Lead service line replacement finished in 2025, but concerns remain, and the county health department offers lead information. Go in person for exams, vaccines, blood lead testing and procedures. Call 911 or go to Hurley, the Level I trauma center, for chest pain, stroke signs, severe injury or a safety crisis.
Medicaid: Michigan Medicaid is administered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Most beneficiaries are enrolled in managed care through the Comprehensive Health Care Program (CHCP); MDHHS posts the FY2026 CHCP contract and amendment on its Medicaid Health Plans page. The Healthy Michigan Plan is Michigan’s Medicaid expansion coverage for low-income adults. MI Coordinated Health, a new program for people with both Medicare and Medicaid, launched January 1, 2026 in select counties, replacing MI Health Link, with statewide expansion planned for 2027 (MDHHS newsroom, Oct. 9, 2024).
Nine Medicaid health plans hold CHCP contracts that took effect October 1, 2024 and run through September 30, 2029 with three optional one-year extensions: Aetna Better Health of Michigan, Blue Cross Complete of Michigan, HAP CareSource, McLaren Health Plan, Meridian Health Plan of Michigan, Molina Healthcare of Michigan, Priority Health Choice, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan and Upper Peninsula Health Plan (MHA summary of the April 8, 2024 award; Meridian press release). Plans vary by county per the MDHHS ’Michigan Medicaid Health Plan Listed by County’ (updated 1-10-2025): Wayne County has eight plans (all except Upper Peninsula Health Plan); Kent has six (Blue Cross Complete, Molina, McLaren, Priority Health Choice, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare); Ingham has four (McLaren, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, HAP CareSource); Washtenaw has six (Blue Cross Complete, McLaren, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, HAP CareSource); Genesee has six (Blue Cross Complete, Molina, McLaren, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare, HAP CareSource); Kalamazoo has four (McLaren, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna); Alpena has four (Blue Cross Complete, Molina, McLaren, Priority Health Choice); Marquette and the rest of the Upper Peninsula have one (Upper Peninsula Health Plan).
