Are there community health centers in Ann Arbor for in-person care?

Good to know

Services, screening recommendations, testing, treatment options, referrals and prescribing may vary with your age, medical history, symptoms, where you are physically located at the time of the visit, state and federal requirements, insurance requirements, and whether your condition can be safely managed by telehealth. Conditions and services listed here are examples. An appointment does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, a prescription, a controlled medication, hormone therapy, a lab order, an imaging study, a sleep study, a specialist referral, an accommodation letter or a particular treatment. Treatment decisions follow a clinical evaluation and the provider’s judgment.

Getting care in Ann Arbor

University and academic-medicine town with two Level I trauma centers and the state’s lowest uninsured rates among these places, where mental health and access to services still top local needs assessments.

Ann Arbor is home to University of Michigan Health and Trinity Health Ann Arbor, both Level I trauma centers, yet local assessments in 2024 still ranked mental health and access to services as the county’s top unmet needs. Specialist capacity does not always mean a quick primary care or psychiatry appointment, especially if you are a student, new to town or between insurance plans. A video visit with Charles Wade, FNP-BC, covers primary care, mental health, ADHD, weight management, dermatology and minor illness. He orders labs and imaging to be done locally and sends prescriptions to your pharmacy. Packard Health is the area’s federally qualified health center if you need in-person sliding-fee care.

Access in Washtenaw County

Washtenaw County’s 2023-24 Community Health Assessment named mental health, access to health care and access to healthy food as top priorities; the 2024 joint hospital CHNA (U-M Health, Trinity Health Ann Arbor, Chelsea Hospital) ranked mental health, access to services and housing. HRSA lists Packard Health as an FQHC HPSA (score 17 primary care / 14 mental health). ACS 2024 5-year: 2.6% uninsured; 1.8% of households with no internet subscription. The county reported 56 opioid-related deaths in 2023.

Who this helps most in Ann Arbor

This works for Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti residents who want continuity for anxiety, depression, ADHD, blood pressure, diabetes or weight management with appointments based on current availability, and for families with children ages five and older who need a quick look at a rash or an ear complaint. Washtenaw County reported 56 opioid-related deaths in 2023, and recovery-focused primary care is easier to keep up with from home.

Go in person for physical exams, vaccines, procedures and anything a camera cannot assess. For chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe injury, overdose or a mental health emergency, call 911 or go to University Hospital or Trinity Health Ann Arbor, both Level I trauma centers.

Local health considerations

  • Mental Health is the county’s top-ranked need in both the 2024 hospital CHNA and the county health assessment.
  • Opioids: 56 opioid-related deaths in Washtenaw County in 2023 per the county health department.
  • Youth and young adults: Corner Health Center in Ypsilanti serves ages 12-25 regardless of ability to pay, reflecting a large student and young-adult population.
