Conditions and services listed here are examples. An appointment does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, a prescription, a controlled medication, hormone therapy, a lab order, an imaging study, a sleep study, a specialist referral, an accommodation letter or a particular treatment. Treatment decisions follow a clinical evaluation and the provider’s judgment.

Getting care in Lexington

Kentucky’s second-largest city and a merged urban county government, home to the University of Kentucky and UK HealthCare, the Level I trauma center that receives patients from much of central and eastern Kentucky.

Lexington is where much of eastern Kentucky comes for serious care. UK Chandler Hospital on Rose Street is one of only two adult Level I trauma centers in the state, and UK Good Samaritan, Baptist Health Lexington and CHI Saint Joseph’s two hospitals add emergency departments across town. The shortage here is mental health. HRSA has designated low-income mental health shortage areas covering downtown and a second Lexington service area, and the city’s community health centers carry some of Kentucky’s highest shortage scores.

A video visit with Wade’s Care First gives you primary care, depression and anxiety care, ADHD follow-up or weight management between classes or shifts, with labs and prescriptions sent to a Lexington location near you.

Access in Fayette County

HRSA designates two low-income mental health shortage areas inside Fayette County, LI-Fayette County 6 Downtown (score 19) and LI-Fayette County 3 (score 18), both from May 2025, plus a high-needs geographic mental health HPSA for the Nicholasville area. The FQHC HPSAs for HealthFirst Bluegrass (primary care 22, mental health 23) and Bluegrass Community Health Center are among the highest scores in the state. Fayette Service Area has been a Medically Underserved Area since 1994. Lextran runs the city bus system from the downtown transit center, with Wheels paratransit.

Who this helps most in Lexington

Fayette County is healthier on paper than most of Kentucky. CDC PLACES puts adult diabetes at 11.6 percent and obesity at 33.7 percent, well under the state’s county medians, yet about one adult in six reports frequent mental distress. That makes Lexington a good fit for telehealth mental health and ADHD care: University of Kentucky and Transylvania students far from a home doctor, hospital and horse-farm workers on rotating shifts, and parents who cannot leave work for a refill visit.

Primary Care, blood pressure checks and weight management work the same way. Go in person for chest pain, stroke signs, serious injury or a mental health crisis; call 911 or go to UK Chandler or the nearest emergency department.

Local health considerations

  • Chronic disease: CDC PLACES (2024 release; 2021–2022 survey data; crude modeled estimates) estimates Fayette County adult diabetes at 11.6% and obesity at 33.7%, below Kentucky county medians of 15.1% and 40.4%; 17.3% of adults report frequent mental distress.
  • Mental Health shortage: two low-income mental health HPSAs inside the county (HRSA, 2025).
  • Regional referral: UK Chandler is one of only two adult Level I trauma centers in Kentucky.
