University town and former industrial city; next to the University of Notre Dame and the regional hub for north-central Indiana and southwest Michigan.
South Bend has solid hospital coverage: Memorial Hospital downtown is a Level II trauma center, and Saint Joseph Health System’s Mishawaka Medical Center sits a few miles east. The pressure point is primary and mental health care. In March 2026 HRSA designated a new low-income mental health shortage area for St. Joseph County, the county already carried a low-income primary care shortage designation, and HealthLinc’s recent Mishawaka expansion was built specifically to shorten waits for new patients.
A video visit adds capacity without adding a drive down Western Avenue or across the river. You can handle depression, anxiety, ADHD, blood pressure and routine primary care from home, and any blood work, imaging or prescription is routed to a South Bend or Mishawaka facility you choose.
HRSA designated a low-income mental health HPSA for St. Joseph County (’LI-MHCA 17’, March 6, 2026, score 15; the older countywide geographic designation is proposed for withdrawal) and a low-income primary care HPSA (’LI-St. Joseph County’, 2017, score 12); ’St. Joseph Service Area’ MUAs date to 1984 and 1994. HealthLinc’s Mishawaka clinic expansion (Nov. 2025, $250,000 Community Foundation grant) was explicitly meant to shorten the wait for new patients and add 14,000 visits in 2026, a sign of primary care demand.
Lead exposure is a documented local problem: 70 percent of county housing predates 1978 (county health department), and 425 children had elevated blood lead in 2024 (state activity report). Transpo (South Bend Public Transportation Corporation) runs buses in South Bend and Mishawaka with a route to Elkhart.
Three groups in South Bend stand out. First, the roughly 13,000 Notre Dame students and other young adults who need ADHD, anxiety or depression care while away from their home doctor. Second, families in older housing: 70 percent of the county’s homes predate 1978, and 425 local children had elevated blood lead in 2024, so if your child is under seven and has not been tested, a video visit can get that order placed.
Third, adults with depression, which CDC PLACES estimates affects 27.7 percent of county adults, in a county now designated a mental health shortage area. Go to the emergency department for chest pain, stroke signs, serious injury or severe breathing trouble; Memorial Hospital’s ED is open 24 hours.
Medicaid: Indiana Medicaid runs five member programs: Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP, adults 19-64 and pregnant women), Hoosier Healthwise (children and pregnant women), Hoosier Care Connect (people 59 or younger who are blind or disabled and not eligible for Medicare, including SSI recipients and some children in foster care), Indiana PathWays for Aging (eligible Medicaid members age 60 and older), and Traditional Medicaid (fee-for-service).
