Good to know

Services, screening recommendations, testing, treatment options, referrals and prescribing may vary with your age, medical history, symptoms, where you are physically located at the time of the visit, state and federal requirements, insurance requirements, and whether your condition can be safely managed by telehealth. Conditions and services listed here are examples. An appointment does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, a prescription, a controlled medication, hormone therapy, a lab order, an imaging study, a sleep study, a specialist referral, an accommodation letter or a particular treatment. Treatment decisions follow a clinical evaluation and the provider’s judgment.

Getting care in Plymouth

Farm-county seat on US 30 between South Bend and Fort Wayne, about 25 miles south of South Bend; its small hospital has lost obstetrics and intensive care in recent years.

Plymouth still has a hospital, Saint Joseph Health System’s Plymouth Medical Center on Lake Avenue, but it is smaller than it used to be. In 2023 the system closed the New Beginnings Birthplace and its OB-GYN office after it could not recruit an obstetrician, and the mayor noted the intensive care unit had already closed. Primary Care, immediate care and pediatric offices remain. Marshall County has no federally qualified health center, sits inside a designated mental health shortage area, and the Plymouth area has been a Medically Underserved Area since 2011.

A video visit with Wade’s Care First is a way to keep up with primary care, mental health, ADHD, weight management and sleep concerns without driving to South Bend, while local offices and the hospital handle what needs hands.

Access in Marshall County

Marshall County is inside the geographic mental health HPSA ’Mental Health Catchment Area 28, Warsaw’ (designated Nov. 2021, score 17), and the ’Plymouth Service Area’ has been a HRSA Medically Underserved Area since Aug. 2011; a low-income primary care HPSA for the county (2018) is proposed for withdrawal. Saint Joseph Health System closed Plymouth’s New Beginnings Birthplace and its OB-GYN office in spring 2023 after failing to recruit an obstetrician, and the mayor said the hospital’s intensive care unit had already closed (WSBT, March 2023); primary care, immediate care and pediatric offices remained in Plymouth (WNDU, May 2023).

HealthLinc Knox is one regional option for sliding-fee care. Check current Quest and Labcorp directories, or contact the local hospital laboratory, to confirm a suitable collection site for your ordered test. CDC PLACES estimates 10.9 percent of adults 18-64 are uninsured and only 76.0 percent had a routine checkup in the past year, the lowest of the nine places profiled.

Who this helps most in Plymouth

Marshall County has the highest adult obesity rate of the nine Indiana places we profiled, 43.4 percent countywide and 45.0 percent in Plymouth by CDC PLACES estimates, and the lowest share of adults getting a yearly checkup, 76 percent. About 10.9 percent of working-age adults are uninsured, which is where the Healthy Indiana Plan matters. Video visits help uninsured or HIP-covered working adults, farm and factory workers who cannot leave during clinic hours, parents of children five and older now that local pediatric options have narrowed, and anyone seeking depression, anxiety or ADHD care in a shortage area. Pregnant patients should arrange in-person prenatal care with an obstetric clinician. Confirm the clinician’s current office and delivery hospital. For chest pain, stroke signs, serious injury or trouble breathing, call 911.

Local health considerations

  • Lost local services: birthing unit and OB-GYN office closed 2023, ICU closed earlier (WSBT).
  • Highest obesity and lowest checkup rate of the nine places: CDC PLACES 2025 release, using 2023 age-adjusted modeled estimates Marshall County obesity 43.4% (Plymouth city 45.0%), routine checkup 76.0%, uninsured 18-64 10.9%, smoking 17.9%.
  • Mental Health shortage: geographic mental health HPSA (2021); Bowen Center is the local community mental health look-alike.
  • Rural context: 35 Indiana counties lack a hospital with birthing facilities; rural counties have far fewer providers per capita and slower broadband (2025 Indiana State Rural Health Report).
