Good to know

Services, screening recommendations, testing, treatment options, referrals and prescribing may vary with your age, medical history, symptoms, where you are physically located at the time of the visit, state and federal requirements, insurance requirements, and whether your condition can be safely managed by telehealth. Conditions and services listed here are examples. An appointment does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, a prescription, a controlled medication, hormone therapy, a lab order, an imaging study, a sleep study, a specialist referral, an accommodation letter or a particular treatment. Treatment decisions follow a clinical evaluation and the provider’s judgment.

Getting care in Fort Wayne

Indiana’s second-largest city; manufacturing and health-care hub for northeast Indiana, anchored by two competing hospital networks (Parkview and Lutheran).

Fort Wayne is unusual for a mid-sized city: it has two Level II trauma centers, Parkview Regional Medical Center on the north side and Lutheran Hospital on the southwest side, plus Lutheran Downtown and Dupont hospitals. Emergency care is not the problem. The federal shortage data points elsewhere. Every part of Allen County is inside a designated mental health shortage area, and both south and north Fort Wayne carry low-income primary care shortage designations added in 2025.

Neighborhood Health, the city’s community health center, has reported appointment waits tied to limited space. A video visit gives you another door into primary care, mental health and ADHD treatment while you keep your local hospital system for anything that needs an exam room, and your orders stay in Fort Wayne.

Access in Allen County

All of Allen County is inside a geographic mental health HPSA (’MHCA 20, Adams/Allen/Wells Counties’, designated Feb. 2022, score 12). Two low-income primary care HPSAs cover south Fort Wayne (designated Sept. 2025, score 19) and north Fort Wayne (Nov. 2025, score 15), and ’Low Income, South Fort Wayne’ has been a Medically Underserved Population since 1993. Neighborhood Health, the city’s FQHC, served more than 20,000 patients with 53,279 visits across two sites and reported longer appointment waits because of limited space (Journal Gazette, June 2023); its southeast clinic project sits in ZIP 46806, a HRSA shortage area. Citilink (Fort Wayne Public Transportation Corporation) runs city buses on weekdays and Saturdays; no Sunday hours are listed on its site.

Who this helps most in Fort Wayne

Fort Wayne’s health profile looks like much of Indiana: CDC PLACES estimates 39.5 percent of Allen County adults have obesity, 11.8 percent have diabetes, and 26.5 percent have been told they have depression. The countywide mental health shortage designation identifies a shortage of clinicians; current appointment availability varies by practice, which is where video visits for anxiety, depression and ADHD help most. Shift workers at the city’s plants, parents juggling school schedules, and adults managing weight, blood pressure or diabetes who do not want to lose half a day to a clinic trip are good fits. Go in person for chest pain, stroke signs, major injuries or severe breathing trouble; Parkview Regional and Lutheran Hospital both run 24-hour emergency departments.

Local health considerations

  • Countywide mental health shortage: HRSA geographic mental health HPSA for Allen County (2022); PLACES estimates 26.5% of adults have been diagnosed with depression.
  • Metabolic risk: CDC PLACES 2025 release, using 2023 age-adjusted modeled estimates adult obesity 39.5%, diabetes 11.8%, high blood pressure 34.5%; 9.1% of adults 18-64 uninsured.
  • FQHC capacity strain: Neighborhood Health reported 53,279 visits and space-driven appointment waits (Journal Gazette, 2023).
  • Rankings history: Allen County ranked 47th of 92 Indiana counties in the 2018 County Health Rankings, down from 44th (WOWO).
