Good to know

Services, screening recommendations, testing, treatment options, referrals and prescribing may vary with your age, medical history, symptoms, where you are physically located at the time of the visit, state and federal requirements, insurance requirements, and whether your condition can be safely managed by telehealth. Conditions and services listed here are examples. An appointment does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, a prescription, a controlled medication, hormone therapy, a lab order, an imaging study, a sleep study, a specialist referral, an accommodation letter or a particular treatment. Treatment decisions follow a clinical evaluation and the provider’s judgment.

Getting care in Evansville

Ohio River city and the regional medical center for the Indiana-Kentucky-Illinois tri-state, with two large competing hospital systems.

Evansville is the medical hub for the tri-state, with two Level II trauma centers a few miles apart: Deaconess Midtown Hospital on Mary Street and Ascension St. Vincent Evansville on Washington Avenue. Specialists and emergency care are here. What the federal data flags is everyday access and mental health. Vanderburgh County is a High Needs mental health shortage area, carries a low-income primary care shortage designation, and has been a Medically Underserved Area since 1992.

The 2025 community health needs assessment put behavioral health, aging and access to care at the top of the list. A video visit lets you handle depression, anxiety, ADHD and routine primary care from home, and sends any lab or imaging order to ECHO Community Healthcare’s neighborhood or the hospital campus closest to you.

Access in Vanderburgh County

Vanderburgh County is a ’High Needs Geographic’ mental health HPSA (MHCA 27, designated Sept. 2021, score 10) and a low-income primary care HPSA (’LI, Vanderburgh County’, 2023, score 13); the ’Vanderburgh Service Area’ has been a Medically Underserved Area since 1992. The 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment for Vanderburgh and Warrick counties named behavioral health, aging populations, healthy families, access to care, and outreach as its five priorities (14 News, Oct. 1, 2025).

The 2019 County Health Rankings placed Vanderburgh 81st of 92 for health outcomes and 90th for quality of life, with 34 percent adult obesity and 22 percent adult smoking (WNIN). Labcorp lists a collection location inside Walgreens at 925 S. Green River Road. Confirm the requested test, hours and insurance network before visiting.

Who this helps most in Evansville

Vanderburgh County’s numbers point to mental health and smoking-related disease. CDC PLACES estimates 27.9 percent of adults have been diagnosed with depression and 19.3 percent report frequent mental distress, both above the Indiana county median, while 16.8 percent still smoke and 38.6 percent have obesity. Older adults are a stated local priority. That makes video visits a good fit for depression and anxiety follow-up, ADHD care, blood pressure and diabetes management, weight management, and seniors or caregivers who find it hard to get downtown. Use the emergency department instead for chest pain, stroke symptoms, serious injury, severe shortness of breath or thoughts of harming yourself; both Deaconess Midtown and Ascension St. Vincent Evansville have 24-hour emergency departments.

Local health considerations

  • Behavioral health: CDC PLACES 2025 release, using 2023 age-adjusted modeled estimates estimates 27.9% of Vanderburgh adults have diagnosed depression and 19.3% report frequent mental distress; the county is a High Needs mental health HPSA.
  • Smoking and weight: PLACES current smoking 16.8%, obesity 38.6%, high blood pressure 35.1%; 2019 County Health Rankings reported 22% adult smoking and 34% obesity (WNIN).
  • Aging population named a top-five priority in the 2025 Vanderburgh-Warrick Community Health Needs Assessment (14 News).
