An appointment does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, a prescription, a controlled medication, hormone therapy, a lab order, an imaging study, a sleep study, a specialist referral, an accommodation letter or a particular treatment. Treatment decisions follow a clinical evaluation and the provider’s judgment.

Getting care in Bedford

Limestone-country county seat in the southern Indiana hills, about 25 miles south of Bloomington; one critical access hospital serves the county.

Bedford has one hospital, IU Health Bedford, a 25-bed critical access hospital that still handled more than 23,000 emergency visits in 2024. Beyond that, care thins out quickly. In 2025 HRSA designated all of Lawrence County a primary care shortage area, in 2026 it added a low-income mental health shortage designation, and a 2024 analysis counted roughly 1,100 residents for every mental health provider. Southern Indiana Community Health Care and Indiana Health Centers run sliding-fee clinics in Bedford and Mitchell, and Bloomington is 25 miles away.

A video visit with Wade’s Care First is meant to fill the space between: regular primary care, depression and anxiety treatment, ADHD, weight management and sleep problems from your kitchen table, with anything hands-on sent to Bedford.

Access in Lawrence County

Lawrence County carries three current HRSA designations: a geographic primary care HPSA covering the whole county (designated Feb. 11, 2025, score 8), a low-income mental health HPSA (’LI- MHCA 23’, designated May 20, 2026, score 18; the broader geographic mental health HPSA is proposed for withdrawal), and a low-income Medically Underserved Population (Feb. 2020). A January 2024 Stacker analysis of CMS data put the county at 1,127 residents per mental health provider.

The county’s only hospital is a 25-bed critical access hospital, and Labcorp lists a nearby regional collection option in Bloomington at 1310 W. Bloomfield Road, Suite A. The 2025 Indiana State Rural Health Report notes rural Hoosiers have fewer primary care physicians and mental health providers per capita of urban residents, that nearly half of counties are ’ambulance deserts,’ and that rural broadband speeds lag, which matters for video visits.

Who this helps most in Bedford

Lawrence County’s health data show why distance matters here. CDC PLACES estimates 41.8 percent of adults have obesity, 43.7 percent within Bedford itself, with 26.9 percent living with arthritis and 17.3 percent still smoking. Rural Indiana has fewer primary care and mental health providers per capita of urban areas, and broadband is slower, so test your connection before a first visit. Video care fits people managing diabetes, blood pressure, weight or chronic pain who otherwise skip follow-ups, adults who have never found a counselor or psychiatric prescriber locally, parents of school-age kids, and older residents who no longer drive to Bloomington. Go to IU Health Bedford’s emergency department for chest pain, stroke signs, serious injury or severe breathing trouble; call 911 rather than driving yourself.

Local health considerations

  • Whole-county primary care shortage (HRSA geographic HPSA, 2025) and 1,127 residents per mental health provider (Stacker/CMS, Jan. 2024).
  • Obesity and arthritis: CDC PLACES 2025 release, using 2023 age-adjusted modeled estimates Lawrence County obesity 41.8% (Bedford city 43.7%), arthritis 26.9%, smoking 17.3%.
  • Rural access: rural Indiana has about 5 primary care physicians per 10,000 people vs. 8 in urban areas and 17 vs. 26 mental health providers; broadband speeds significantly lower in rural counties (2025 Indiana State Rural Health Report).
  • Local testing: IU Health Bedford provides laboratory services, and Labcorp lists a collection center in Bloomington. Confirm the appropriate collection site before traveling.
