First St. (emergency care; imaging and radiology) and HSHS St. John’s Hospital, 800 E. Carpenter St.

Where will I go for blood work if I live in Springfield?

Quest Diagnostics, Springfield patient service center at 3119 Robbins Rd. Hospital outpatient labs at Memorial Health and HSHS St. John’s accept outside orders. We send the order electronically to a location that is convenient for you or in your insurance network. Results come back to us for review with you.

Which Springfield hospitals have an emergency department?

Springfield Memorial Hospital (Memorial Health; formerly Memorial Medical Center), 701 N. First St. (emergency care; imaging and radiology) and HSHS St. John’s Hospital, 800 E. Carpenter St. For chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke symptoms, severe bleeding, a major injury or thoughts of harming yourself, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department rather than booking a video visit.

Are there community health centers in Springfield for in-person care?

SIU Center for Family Medicine, Springfield, 520 N. 4th St. (part of what SIU Medicine calls the largest university-owned FQHC in the country; HRSA lists Southern Illinois University School of Medicine as an FQHC) and Central Counties Health Centers (HRSA-listed FQHC in Sangamon County) serve the area with in-person primary care on a sliding scale. Many patients pair that kind of local clinic with telehealth for follow-ups, medication management and specialist coordination.

Can I use Illinois Medicaid or other insurance for a telehealth visit from Springfield?

Many plans are accepted and benefits are verified before your visit. BCBS / Anthem PPO, UnitedHealthcare PPO, UMR (PPO), Aetna PPO, Cigna PPO, Humana PPO, Ambetter PPO, Illinois Medicaid, Meridian Health Plan of Illinois, Aetna Better Health of Illinois, TRICARE. Illinois Medicaid is run by the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS). Most members are enrolled in HealthChoice Illinois, the statewide managed care program; HFS says members have at least four health plans to choose from depending on where they live, and about 2.4 million of roughly 3.1 million Illinois Medicaid enrollees are in a HealthChoice Illinois plan. HFS lists these HealthChoice Illinois plans: Aetna Better Health of Illinois; Blue Cross Community Health Plan (Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, the largest MCO with about 700,000 members); CountyCare Health Plan (Cook County only, operated by Cook County Health); Meridian Health Plan (Meridian also runs YouthCare for former youth in care); and Molina Healthcare. In June 2026 HFS announced new HealthChoice Illinois contracts starting January 1, 2027 with six MCOs: Aetna Better Health of Illinois, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, Humana, Meridian, Molina Healthcare, and CountyCare for Cook County. Current contracts run through December 31, 2026, so plan options may change at the start of 2027. Coverage varies by plan, and self-pay pricing is posted if your plan is not accepted.

Is Springfield a health professional shortage area?

Primary Care HPSA (Medicaid-eligible population, Sangamon County, designated April 2026); mental health HPSA (LI Central Area MHCA, 2026); Springfield Service Area MUA (1994). Telehealth can complement local clinicians by offering another way to access primary care, mental health and medication follow-up while you keep your local relationships.

Can orders be sent to a laboratory or imaging facility near me?

When clinically appropriate, we can send orders to a laboratory or imaging facility you choose. Confirm that the location performs the requested test, accepts the order and participates in your insurance network. Availability and travel distance vary by community.

Good to know

Services, screening recommendations, testing, treatment options, referrals and prescribing may vary with your age, medical history, symptoms, where you are physically located at the time of the visit, state and federal requirements, insurance requirements, and whether your condition can be safely managed by telehealth. Conditions and services listed here are examples. An appointment does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, a prescription, a controlled medication, hormone therapy, a lab order, an imaging study, a sleep study, a specialist referral, an accommodation letter or a particular treatment. Treatment decisions follow a clinical evaluation and the provider’s judgment.

Getting care in Springfield

State capital with two large hospital systems and the SIU School of Medicine; stable, slightly declining metro population.

Springfield, the state capital, has two large hospitals and a university medical school, but access is uneven. HRSA added a shortage designation for Sangamon County’s Medicaid-eligible population in April 2026, and the Springfield Service Area has been a Medically Underserved Area since 1994. SIU Medicine’s Center for Family Medicine on North 4th Street and Central Counties Health Centers are the city’s federally qualified health centers and see patients regardless of ability to pay. Telehealth with Charles Wade, FNP-BC, is another way in: a video visit for primary care, mental health, ADHD, weight management, skin or sleep concerns, with labs, imaging and prescriptions routed to Springfield providers you can reach.

Access in Sangamon County

HRSA designated Sangamon County’s Medicaid-eligible population a primary care Health Professional Shortage Area in April 2026 (score 15) and includes the county in the LI Central Area mental health shortage designation (February 2026); the Springfield Service Area has been a Medically Underserved Area since 1994. South Sangamon’s geographic HPSA is proposed for withdrawal.

Who this helps most in Springfield

This is a good fit for state employees and other Springfield workers who cannot leave the office for a routine visit, parents of school-age children, older adults who find driving to appointments difficult, and anyone waiting weeks for a mental health or ADHD appointment. Chronic disease check-ins, medication adjustments and weight management work well by video. Choose in-person care when you need a hands-on exam, stitches or urgent imaging. For emergencies, go to Springfield Memorial Hospital at 701 N. First Street or HSHS St. John’s Hospital at 800 E. Carpenter Street, or call 911; do not use a video visit for chest pain, stroke symptoms or severe bleeding.

Local health considerations

  • A new 2026 federal shortage designation for Sangamon County’s Medicaid-eligible residents signals limited primary care capacity for people on Medicaid.
  • SIU’s Center for Family Medicine serves all patients regardless of insurance or ability to pay on a sliding fee scale, with behavioral health services.
  • The county health department offers immunizations, STI care, PrEP and the Illinois Breast & Cervical Cancer Program locally.
