Northern Illinois manufacturing city on the Rock River with three hospital systems, a Level I trauma center and a long-running population plateau.
Rockford is a city of about 147,000 people in Winnebago County with three hospital systems but a documented shortage of providers for people on low incomes. HRSA designates the county’s low-income population as a primary care shortage area, and a mental health shortage designation covering northern Illinois was renewed in February 2026. Crusader Community Health is the area’s federally funded health center, with sites on Alpine, Broadway, Linden and West State plus Loves Park and Belvidere.
A video visit lets you see a nurse practitioner without traveling to a clinic for the video visit. Charles Wade, FNP-BC, can manage chronic conditions, mental health and ADHD, review skin and sleep concerns, and send labs or prescriptions to Rockford facilities.
HRSA designates Winnebago County’s low-income population as a primary care Health Professional Shortage Area (designated November 2021, score 18) and includes the county in the LI-Northern IL mental health shortage designation (renewed February 2026); the Winnebago Service Area has been a Medically Underserved Area since 1994. Rockford’s three hospitals each received a ’C’ Leapfrog safety grade in fall 2025. Mercyhealth downgraded its Rockton Avenue emergency department to standby status in 2021.
This works well for Rockford residents who need steady care for blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid or cholesterol, help with anxiety, depression or ADHD, weight management, or a quick look at a rash or infection. It also suits parents of children five and older who need sick visits without pulling everyone out of school. Go in person for anything that needs a hands-on exam or urgent imaging.
For emergency care, OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center and Javon Bea Hospital–Riverside are Level I trauma centers. UW Health SwedishAmerican also provides emergency care. The Javon Bea Rockton Avenue campus has run only a standby emergency department since 2021.
