Which Peoria hospitals have an emergency department?

OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, 530 Northeast Glen Oak Avenue. (642 licensed beds; the region’s only Level I trauma center; 80,427 emergency visits; OSF Children’s Hospital of Illinois on the same campus), Carle Health Methodist Hospital, downtown Peoria (Level II trauma center) and Carle Health Proctor Hospital, 5409 N. Are there community health centers in Peoria for in-person care?

Heartland Health Services (FQHC; sites in Peoria, Pekin and Eureka; sliding fee scale). HRSA lists it as Heartland Community Health Clinic Inc and Solvera Healthcare Center (FQHC look-alike, designated 2024) serve the area with in-person primary care on a sliding scale. Many patients pair that kind of local clinic with telehealth for follow-ups, medication management and specialist coordination.

Can I use Illinois Medicaid or other insurance for a telehealth visit from Peoria?

Many plans are accepted and benefits are verified before your visit. BCBS / Anthem PPO, UnitedHealthcare PPO, UMR (PPO), Aetna PPO, Cigna PPO, Humana PPO, Ambetter PPO, Illinois Medicaid, Meridian Health Plan of Illinois, Aetna Better Health of Illinois, TRICARE. Illinois Medicaid is run by the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS). Most members are enrolled in HealthChoice Illinois, the statewide managed care program; HFS says members have at least four health plans to choose from depending on where they live, and about 2.4 million of roughly 3.1 million Illinois Medicaid enrollees are in a HealthChoice Illinois plan. HFS lists these HealthChoice Illinois plans: Aetna Better Health of Illinois; Blue Cross Community Health Plan (Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, the largest MCO with about 700,000 members); CountyCare Health Plan (Cook County only, operated by Cook County Health); Meridian Health Plan (Meridian also runs YouthCare for former youth in care); and Molina Healthcare. In June 2026 HFS announced new HealthChoice Illinois contracts starting January 1, 2027 with six MCOs: Aetna Better Health of Illinois, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, Humana, Meridian, Molina Healthcare, and CountyCare for Cook County. Current contracts run through December 31, 2026, so plan options may change at the start of 2027. Coverage varies by plan, and self-pay pricing is posted if your plan is not accepted.

Is Peoria a health professional shortage area?

Primary Care HPSA (low-income population, Peoria County, 2018); mental health HPSA (LI Central Area MHCA, 2026); City of Peoria and Peoria Service Area MUAs (1994). Telehealth can complement local clinicians by offering another way to access primary care, mental health and medication follow-up while you keep your local relationships.

Can orders be sent to a laboratory or imaging facility near me?

When clinically appropriate, we can send orders to a laboratory or imaging facility you choose. Confirm that the location performs the requested test, accepts the order and participates in your insurance network. Availability and travel distance vary by community.

Good to know

Services, screening recommendations, testing, treatment options, referrals and prescribing may vary with your age, medical history, symptoms, where you are physically located at the time of the visit, state and federal requirements, insurance requirements, and whether your condition can be safely managed by telehealth. Conditions and services listed here are examples. An appointment does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, a prescription, a controlled medication, hormone therapy, a lab order, an imaging study, a sleep study, a specialist referral, an accommodation letter or a particular treatment. Treatment decisions follow a clinical evaluation and the provider’s judgment.

Getting care in Peoria

Central Illinois river city and regional medical hub anchored by OSF Saint Francis, with a shrinking metro population.

Peoria is central Illinois’s medical hub, home to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center and the OSF Children’s Hospital of Illinois, yet the city itself has carried a federal Medically Underserved Area designation since 1994, and HRSA designates Peoria County’s low-income residents as a primary care shortage population. The metro area has lost population since 2010, which strains clinic staffing. Heartland Health Services, the local federally qualified health center, serves Peoria, Pekin and Eureka on a sliding fee scale.

If you cannot get a timely appointment, a video visit with Charles Wade, FNP-BC, is an alternative for primary care, mental health, ADHD, weight management and minor urgent problems, with orders sent to Peoria-area facilities.

Access in Peoria County

HRSA designates Peoria County’s low-income population as a primary care Health Professional Shortage Area (2018, score 16) and includes the county in the LI Central Area mental health shortage designation (February 2026); both the Peoria Service Area and the City of Peoria Service Area have been Medically Underserved Areas since 1994. The metro population fell from about 416,200 in 2010 to 364,600 in 2024.

Who this helps most in Peoria

Telehealth fits Peoria-area adults managing chronic conditions, people needing ADHD or mental health follow-up, anyone working on weight, and families who want a quick sick visit for a child aged five or older. Rural residents in Tazewell, Woodford or Fulton counties who drive into Peoria for care may find video visits save the trip entirely. Seek in-person care for injuries, high fevers in young children, or anything needing a physical exam.

For emergencies, OSF Saint Francis is the region’s only Level I trauma center and reports more than 80,000 emergency visits a year; Carle Health Methodist downtown is a Level II trauma center, and Carle Health Proctor also has an emergency department.

Local health considerations

  • OSF Saint Francis is the region’s only Level I trauma center and the campus includes OSF Children’s Hospital of Illinois, so serious pediatric and trauma cases from a wide area funnel there.
  • The metro area has lost about 50,000 residents since 2010, which affects clinic staffing and wait times.
  • The Peoria City/County Health Department accepts Illinois Medicaid plans including Molina and Meridian, but immunizations and STI/HIV testing are by appointment only.
