In June 2026 HFS announced new HealthChoice Illinois contracts starting January 1, 2027 with six MCOs: Aetna Better Health of Illinois, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, Humana, Meridian, Molina Healthcare, and CountyCare for Cook County. West-central Illinois railroad and college town that became a one-hospital community when Galesburg Cottage Hospital closed in January 2022.
Galesburg is a railroad town of about 29,500 in Knox County, and it has been a one-hospital town since Galesburg Cottage Hospital shut down on January 8, 2022, days after Medicare moved to cut it off over safety violations. OSF HealthCare St. Mary Medical Center is now the only hospital, and the Sheps Center counts Cottage among Illinois’s rural hospital closures. HRSA designates Knox County’s low-income residents a primary care shortage population, Knox County a Medically Underserved Area, and the region a mental health shortage area. Knox Community Health Center, run by the county health department, is the local federally qualified health center. A video visit with Charles Wade, FNP-BC, adds capacity without a drive to Peoria.
Galesburg Cottage Hospital closed January 8, 2022, leaving OSF St. Mary as the sole hospital; OSF asked residents to reserve the emergency department for life-threatening problems. HRSA designates Knox County’s low-income population a primary care Health Professional Shortage Area (score 15, rural), lists Knox County as a Medically Underserved Area (2009) and the Copley/Knox Service Area as an MUA (1994), and includes the county in the LI Central Area mental health shortage designation (February 2026). Three OSF rural health clinics in Abingdon, Knoxville and Galesburg (Seminary) carry facility HPSA designations.
This helps Galesburg and Knox County residents who lost a familiar clinic or doctor when Cottage closed, people in Abingdon, Knoxville and the surrounding farm towns, and anyone waiting on a mental health or ADHD appointment. Chronic condition management, weight, skin and sleep concerns, and sick visits for children five and older all work by video. Older adults who no longer drive at night may find it especially practical.
Go in person for injuries, anything needing an exam, or urgent imaging. For emergencies, OSF St. Mary Medical Center is Galesburg’s only emergency department; OSF has asked residents to reserve it for life-threatening problems and to use PromptCare or primary care for everything else.
