South Side community area with deep, well-documented health and economic disparities, one safety-net hospital and a long record of federal shortage designations.
Englewood, on Chicago’s South Side, has about 23,000 residents, down more than 40 percent since 2000. The need is well documented: median household income is $31,397, 12.4 percent of residents are uninsured versus 9.7 percent citywide, 24.5 percent live with a disability, and 43 percent of households have no vehicle. HRSA designated West Englewood a geographic primary care shortage area in March 2026 and Englewood’s low-income population a shortage area in November 2025.
The Chicago Department of Public Health names Englewood a priority community with a life expectancy of 66.2 years. St. Bernard Hospital and Howard Brown Health’s 63rd Street clinic anchor local care; a video visit with Charles Wade, FNP-BC, adds primary care, mental health and ADHD without a bus ride.
CMAP’s June 2026 snapshot (2020-2024 ACS): median household income $31,397 versus $77,902 citywide; 12.4% uninsured versus 9.7% citywide; 24.5% of residents have a disability (12.0% citywide); 43.0% of households have no vehicle (26.6% citywide); 15.3% of households have no internet access (6.9% citywide); 23.0% of the labor force is unemployed. HRSA designated West Englewood a geographic primary care HPSA on March 6, 2026 (score 16) and ’LI Englewood 68 Chicago’ a low-income population primary care HPSA on November 1, 2025; a 1978 West Englewood/Englewood geographic designation is proposed for withdrawal. CDPH’s Healthy Chicago 2025 plan names Englewood a priority community with a life expectancy of 66.2 years.
Telehealth helps Englewood residents who juggle work and caregiving, who have waited weeks for a clinic appointment, or who manage diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma or depression and need regular check-ins without travel. ADHD care, weight management and skin problems also work by video. Children five and older can be seen for common illnesses. It is not a substitute for emergency care: for chest pain, stroke symptoms, gunshot or stab wounds, severe asthma attacks or thoughts of suicide, call 911. St. Bernard Hospital runs an emergency room on 64th Street, and the University of Chicago Medical Center in Hyde Park has operated a Level 1 adult trauma center since 2018.
