Howard Brown Health, 63rd St., 641 W. 63rd St., Chicago 60621 (Health Center Program grantee; medical and dental), Friend Family Health Center and Access Community Health Network serve the area with in-person primary care on a sliding scale. Many patients pair that kind of local clinic with telehealth for follow-ups, medication management and specialist coordination.

Can I use Illinois Medicaid or other insurance for a telehealth visit from Englewood (Chicago)?

Many plans are accepted and benefits are verified before your visit. BCBS / Anthem PPO, UnitedHealthcare PPO, UMR (PPO), Aetna PPO, Cigna PPO, Humana PPO, Ambetter PPO, Illinois Medicaid, Meridian Health Plan of Illinois, Aetna Better Health of Illinois, TRICARE. Illinois Medicaid is run by the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS). Most members are enrolled in HealthChoice Illinois, the statewide managed care program; HFS says members have at least four health plans to choose from depending on where they live, and about 2.4 million of roughly 3.1 million Illinois Medicaid enrollees are in a HealthChoice Illinois plan. HFS lists these HealthChoice Illinois plans: Aetna Better Health of Illinois; Blue Cross Community Health Plan (Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, the largest MCO with about 700,000 members); CountyCare Health Plan (Cook County only, operated by Cook County Health); Meridian Health Plan (Meridian also runs YouthCare for former youth in care); and Molina Healthcare. In June 2026 HFS announced new HealthChoice Illinois contracts starting January 1, 2027 with six MCOs: Aetna Better Health of Illinois, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, Humana, Meridian, Molina Healthcare, and CountyCare for Cook County. Current contracts run through December 31, 2026, so plan options may change at the start of 2027. Coverage varies by plan, and self-pay pricing is posted if your plan is not accepted.

Primary Care HPSAs: West Englewood geographic HPSA (designated March 2026, score 16) and LI Englewood 68 Chicago population HPSA (designated November 2025); West Englewood/Englewood geographic HPSA (1978) proposed for withdrawal; a 2004 Illinois House resolution also described Englewood as a federally designated HPSA. Telehealth can complement local clinicians by offering another way to access primary care, mental health and medication follow-up while you keep your local relationships.

Can orders be sent to a laboratory or imaging facility near me?

When clinically appropriate, we can send orders to a laboratory or imaging facility you choose. Confirm that the location performs the requested test, accepts the order and participates in your insurance network. Availability and travel distance vary by community.

Good to know

Services, screening recommendations, testing, treatment options, referrals and prescribing may vary with your age, medical history, symptoms, where you are physically located at the time of the visit, state and federal requirements, insurance requirements, and whether your condition can be safely managed by telehealth. Conditions and services listed here are examples. An appointment does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, a prescription, a controlled medication, hormone therapy, a lab order, an imaging study, a sleep study, a specialist referral, an accommodation letter or a particular treatment. Treatment decisions follow a clinical evaluation and the provider’s judgment.

Getting care in Englewood (Chicago)

South Side community area with deep, well-documented health and economic disparities, one safety-net hospital and a long record of federal shortage designations.

Englewood, on Chicago’s South Side, has about 23,000 residents, down more than 40 percent since 2000. The need is well documented: median household income is $31,397, 12.4 percent of residents are uninsured versus 9.7 percent citywide, 24.5 percent live with a disability, and 43 percent of households have no vehicle. HRSA designated West Englewood a geographic primary care shortage area in March 2026 and Englewood’s low-income population a shortage area in November 2025.

The Chicago Department of Public Health names Englewood a priority community with a life expectancy of 66.2 years. St. Bernard Hospital and Howard Brown Health’s 63rd Street clinic anchor local care; a video visit with Charles Wade, FNP-BC, adds primary care, mental health and ADHD without a bus ride.

Access in Cook County (Chicago community area 68)

CMAP’s June 2026 snapshot (2020-2024 ACS): median household income $31,397 versus $77,902 citywide; 12.4% uninsured versus 9.7% citywide; 24.5% of residents have a disability (12.0% citywide); 43.0% of households have no vehicle (26.6% citywide); 15.3% of households have no internet access (6.9% citywide); 23.0% of the labor force is unemployed. HRSA designated West Englewood a geographic primary care HPSA on March 6, 2026 (score 16) and ’LI Englewood 68 Chicago’ a low-income population primary care HPSA on November 1, 2025; a 1978 West Englewood/Englewood geographic designation is proposed for withdrawal. CDPH’s Healthy Chicago 2025 plan names Englewood a priority community with a life expectancy of 66.2 years.

Who this helps most in Englewood (Chicago)

Telehealth helps Englewood residents who juggle work and caregiving, who have waited weeks for a clinic appointment, or who manage diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma or depression and need regular check-ins without travel. ADHD care, weight management and skin problems also work by video. Children five and older can be seen for common illnesses. It is not a substitute for emergency care: for chest pain, stroke symptoms, gunshot or stab wounds, severe asthma attacks or thoughts of suicide, call 911. St. Bernard Hospital runs an emergency room on 64th Street, and the University of Chicago Medical Center in Hyde Park has operated a Level 1 adult trauma center since 2018.

Local health considerations

  • Life expectancy of 66.2 years, one of the lowest in Chicago; CDPH names Englewood a Healthy Chicago 2025 priority community.
  • Diabetes: St. Bernard’s 2021 Community Health Needs Assessment found the share of Englewood adults diagnosed with diabetes was twice the city average.
  • Digital and transport barriers: 15.3% of households have no internet access and 43% have no vehicle (2020-2024 ACS), so phone-based visits and nearby draw sites matter.
