A border and agricultural city on the Colorado River with one of the nation’s largest winter-vegetable economies, a large Hispanic majority and intense summer heat.
Yuma County has one hospital system, Onvida Health (the renamed Yuma Regional Medical Center), and a federal count that says the county is still short about 13 primary care physicians and 11 psychiatrists. Clinics run full, and if you work the fields or packing sheds your hours rarely match theirs. Wade’s Care First sees you by video in English for primary care, mental health, ADHD, weight management, skin problems and minor illnesses, and sends labs, imaging and prescriptions to Yuma.
If you qualify for sliding-fee care, Sunset Health and the Regional Center for Border Health have clinics in Yuma, Somerton and San Luis; telehealth can work alongside them. In-person exams, vaccines and procedures are referred locally.
Yuma County needs 12.6 more primary care physician FTEs and 10.6 psychiatrist FTEs to clear its HRSA shortage designations, a large gap for a county of 220,000. ADHS reports the heat-related ED visit rate among Arizona residents is highest in La Paz, Mohave and Yuma counties (Yuma: 67.5 per 100,000 in 2025, 117.9 in 2024, versus 47.5 in Maricopa in 2025), and the 2024 heat death rate was likewise highest in La Paz, Mohave and Yuma; 35 heat deaths occurred in Yuma County in 2024.
Farm work is central: Yuma County sold $1.5 billion in agricultural products in 2022, including $1.13 billion in vegetables (3rd of all U.S. counties) on 109,195 harvested vegetable acres. About 64.9% of county residents are Hispanic. Arizona’s uninsured rate was 10.3% in 2024.
Telehealth is a strong fit for Yuma’s farmworkers and agricultural staff, winter residents who need continuity with a clinician, military families near the proving ground and Marine air station, and anyone who cannot take a weekday off. It handles refills, blood pressure and diabetes follow-up, anxiety and depression, ADHD, rashes and sun-damaged skin, sleep problems and weight planning. Heat is the most important local danger: Yuma County’s rate of heat-related emergency visits is among the highest in Arizona, and 35 people died of heat here in 2024. Cramps, confusion, vomiting or fainting after time in the fields need immediate cooling and an emergency department, not a video call. Chest pain, stroke signs and serious injuries also mean 911.
Medicaid: Arizona’s Medicaid agency is AHCCCS (Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System). Most members are enrolled in AHCCCS Complete Care (ACC) managed care plans that integrate physical and behavioral health. ACC-RBHA plans add regional behavioral health responsibilities (Arizona Complete Health for the North and South service areas; Mercy Care for the Central area). The Arizona Long Term Care System (ALTCS) covers long-term care (UnitedHealthcare, Banner – University Family Care, Mercy Care Plan, and DES/DDD). American Indian members may choose the fee-for-service American Indian Health Program (AIHP) and receive care at IHS, tribally operated and urban Indian facilities; Navajo Nation, Hopi, White Mountain Apache, Gila River and other tribes also run tribal contractors and Tribal RBHAs. Mercy Care administers the DCS Comprehensive Health Plan for children in foster care.
AHCCCS Complete Care plans (AHCCCS health plan list revised 2026-06-30): Arizona Complete Health – Complete Care Plan (statewide except Pinal ZIPs 85542/85192/85550, which it also covers as a separate area); Banner – University Family Care (Maricopa, Pinal, Cochise, Gila, Graham, Greenlee, La Paz, Pima, Santa Cruz, Yuma); Molina Healthcare (Maricopa, Gila, Pinal); Mercy Care (Maricopa, Gila, Pinal); Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Health Choice (Apache, Coconino, Mohave, Navajo, Yavapai, Maricopa, Gila, Pinal); UnitedHealthcare Community Plan (Maricopa, Gila, Pima, Pinal). Note: Care1st no longer appears on the 2026 ACC list.
