Are there community health centers in Show Low for in-person care?

North Country HealthCare – Show Low Clinic (2650 E. Show Low Lake Rd; HRSA-funded; also Holbrook, Springerville and Winslow clinics) serve the area with in-person primary care on a sliding scale. Many patients pair that kind of local clinic with telehealth for follow-ups, medication management and specialist coordination.

Arizona Medicaid plans are not on the participating list right now. Plans accepted in Arizona: BCBS / Anthem PPO, UnitedHealthcare PPO, UMR (PPO), Aetna PPO, Cigna PPO, Humana PPO, Ambetter PPO, TRICARE. Adjacent tribal HPSAs: White Mountain Apache Tribe (primary care score 21, shortage 4.1 FTE; mental health score 20) and Navajo Nation & Hopi Tribe (primary care score 11; mental health score 16). Arizona Center for Rural Health (Dec. 2024): Arizona has primary care physician shortages in all 15 counties, meets 35.4% of its primary care need and needs 493 more PCP FTEs; its mental health brief (2023) finds psychiatrist shortages in every county and just 8.54% of mental health need met. Telehealth can complement local clinicians by offering another way to access primary care, mental health and medication follow-up while you keep your local relationships.

Conditions and services listed here are examples. An appointment does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, a prescription, a controlled medication, hormone therapy, a lab order, an imaging study, a sleep study, a specialist referral, an accommodation letter or a particular treatment. Getting care in Show Low

The commercial and medical hub of the White Mountains, a pine-forest region of retirees, seasonal residents and nearby tribal communities at about 6,300 feet.

Show Low is the medical center for the White Mountains, but it is a small one: Summit Healthcare is a Level IV trauma hospital serving more than 90,000 permanent and seasonal residents across 3,000 square miles, and Navajo County carries federal primary care and mental health shortage designations. If you live in Pinetop-Lakeside, Snowflake, Taylor, Heber-Overgaard or farther out, a routine appointment can mean an hour of driving each way.

Wade’s Care First offers video visits for primary care, mental health, ADHD, weight management, skin concerns and minor illnesses, with labs and prescriptions sent to Show Low. North Country HealthCare’s Show Low clinic offers sliding-fee in-person care; telehealth can work alongside it. A reliable connection is required, so test your internet first.

Access in Navajo County

Navajo County needs an estimated 5.3 more primary care physician FTEs and 2.7 psychiatrist FTEs under HRSA criteria, and the White Mountain Apache Tribe’s tribal HPSA has a primary care score of 21 with a 4.1-physician shortfall, among the highest in Arizona. There is no Level I or Level III trauma center in Navajo or Apache counties; Summit Healthcare is Level IV, and the nearest Level I centers are Flagstaff Medical Center and the Phoenix hospitals.

Broadband is a documented gap: tribal lands make up two-thirds of Navajo County, and in 2025 Frontier and Verizon agreed to an $8 million settlement to expand rural broadband in Navajo and Apache counties. Summit Healthcare describes hospital-based telemedicine services, including emergency telestroke, teleconcussion and teleneurology consultations.

Who this helps most in Show Low

Telehealth fits White Mountain retirees, summer residents who want continuity with the clinician they see the rest of the year, forest, ranch and construction workers, and families in outlying towns. It is well suited to refills, chronic disease follow-up, depression and anxiety, ADHD, sleep problems and skin issues. Members of the White Mountain Apache Tribe and Navajo Nation who use IHS or tribal facilities can use telehealth as a supplement if they choose.

Because the nearest Level I trauma centers are in Flagstaff and Phoenix, do not delay with serious symptoms: chest pain, stroke signs, major injuries, severe breathing trouble or a bad fall need 911 and Summit Healthcare’s emergency department, which can stabilize you and arrange transfer.

Local health considerations

  • Seasonal population: Summit Healthcare says it serves more than 90,000 permanent and seasonal residents in a 3,000-square-mile area, so demand swells in summer when Valley residents escape the heat (Summit Healthcare).
  • Elevation and winter: the Show Low area sits at about 6,300 feet (Arizona State Parks, Fool Hollow Lake), bringing snow, winter driving hazards and altitude effects for visitors.
  • Rural broadband: two-thirds of Navajo County is tribal land, and a 2025 $8 million Frontier/Verizon settlement targets broadband gaps in Navajo and Apache counties (KJZZ).
