Mesa lies within Maricopa County, which has numerous HRSA primary care and mental health HPSAs (PCP FTE shortage 225.6; psychiatrist FTE shortage 40.5). Arizona Center for Rural Health (Dec. 2024): Arizona has primary care physician shortages in all 15 counties, meets 35.4% of its primary care need and needs 493 more PCP FTEs; its mental health brief (2023) finds psychiatrist shortages in every county and just 8.54% of mental health need met. Services, screening recommendations, testing, treatment options, referrals and prescribing may vary with your age, medical history, symptoms, where you are physically located at the time of the visit, state and federal requirements, insurance requirements, and whether your condition can be safely managed by telehealth. Conditions and services listed here are examples. An appointment does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, a prescription, a controlled medication, hormone therapy, a lab order, an imaging study, a sleep study, a specialist referral, an accommodation letter or a particular treatment. Treatment decisions follow a clinical evaluation and the provider’s judgment.

Arizona’s third-largest city by Census estimate, a sprawling East Valley community with large retiree and seasonal populations.
Mesa is bigger than many state capitals, and its clinics fill up the same way the rest of Maricopa County’s do; the county remains short about 226 primary care physicians by federal count. If you live in east Mesa, Red Mountain or near the Superstition Springs area, the nearest available primary care opening may be a long drive in traffic. A video visit with Wade’s Care First brings primary care, mental health, ADHD treatment, weight management and minor urgent care to your phone or laptop.
Mesa is well supplied for in-person needs when they arise: Banner Desert is a Level I trauma center, Banner Baywood serves the east side, and the former Mountain Vista hospital now runs as HonorHealth Four Peaks Medical Center.
Mesa shares Maricopa County’s shortage: the county needs 225.6 more primary care physician FTEs and 40.5 psychiatrist FTEs to clear its HRSA designations. Heat is the dominant local hazard, with 430 county heat-related deaths in 2025 and 608 in 2024. Arizona’s uninsured rate was 10.3% in 2024, and 9.3% of Arizona children were uninsured, second-highest nationally.
Telehealth is a practical option for Mesa residents who are retired and no longer want to drive in summer, parents juggling school schedules, people living in RV or mobile-home communities, and workers whose hours do not match clinic hours. It is a good fit for medication management, mood and anxiety care, ADHD, skin problems, sleep concerns and routine follow-up of diabetes or blood pressure. It is not for emergencies.
Chest pain, stroke symptoms, serious injury, breathing trouble or heat collapse should go to 911 or the nearest emergency department. Indoor heat deaths in this county fall hardest on people over 50 living alone, so if your air conditioning fails during a heat warning, treat that as urgent.
Medicaid: Arizona’s Medicaid agency is AHCCCS (Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System). Most members are enrolled in AHCCCS Complete Care (ACC) managed care plans that integrate physical and behavioral health. ACC-RBHA plans add regional behavioral health responsibilities (Arizona Complete Health for the North and South service areas; Mercy Care for the Central area). The Arizona Long Term Care System (ALTCS) covers long-term care (UnitedHealthcare, Banner – University Family Care, Mercy Care Plan, and DES/DDD). American Indian members may choose the fee-for-service American Indian Health Program (AIHP) and receive care at IHS, tribally operated and urban Indian facilities; Navajo Nation, Hopi, White Mountain Apache, Gila River and other tribes also run tribal contractors and Tribal RBHAs. Mercy Care administers the DCS Comprehensive Health Plan for children in foster care.
AHCCCS Complete Care plans (AHCCCS health plan list revised 2026-06-30): Arizona Complete Health – Complete Care Plan (statewide except Pinal ZIPs 85542/85192/85550, which it also covers as a separate area); Banner – University Family Care (Maricopa, Pinal, Cochise, Gila, Graham, Greenlee, La Paz, Pima, Santa Cruz, Yuma); Molina Healthcare (Maricopa, Gila, Pinal); Mercy Care (Maricopa, Gila, Pinal); Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Health Choice (Apache, Coconino, Mohave, Navajo, Yavapai, Maricopa, Gila, Pinal); UnitedHealthcare Community Plan (Maricopa, Gila, Pima, Pinal). Note: Care1st no longer appears on the 2026 ACC list.
